TFA: It’s good to see that JJ and the folks working on The Force Awakens are still looking to Ralph McQuarrie for inspiration. The top 2 photos are pictures of the new snowtrooper costumes on display at the Star Wars Celebration 2015 in Anaheim. The backpack is very similar to the one shown in the McQuarrie painting (below), and the insignia on the snowtrooper’s chest matches the one used on the helmet in McQuarrie’s painting.
ROTJ: Coruscant’s water needs are met by huge pipelines carrying melted ice from the polar caps of the planet and then transporting that water to various destinations across the planet. In this painting, you can see the relative size of people and trucks next to the huge pipes.
Return of the Jedi didn’t use Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art for Darth Vader’s lava planet lair, but the setting was re-imagined for the climax of Revenge of the Sith, and it may have inspired the lava planet Sullust in the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront
This rarely seen Ralph McQuarrie painting was created to promote the “Sounds of Space” concert in 1978. The concert featured music from Star Wars, The Planets, Flash Gordon, Close Encounters and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The concert was only held at 3 locations: San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, Marin Civic Auditorium, and the Berkeley Community Theater.
